A Bug (or two) in My Ear

How do insects survive the winter? Most develop a variety of strategies to survive the freezing temperatures of the season.

How does the ASC improve? Largely through a range of excellent strategies proposed by our ASC Chairs and volunteers in the field.

We are very pleased to announce a variety of changes to the ASC website based upon the recommendations of our ASC Chairs. To view these changes to the site, you will need to login to the ASC site using your secure Username and Password. If you do not recall your pairing, please email Isabel Gomez at isabel@uchicago.edu and she will send call you with your pairing. Please keep this information confidentials.

Some of the noteworthy additions:

(1) Interview reports are now available to ASC Chairs through the secure login. The link is titled "View Interview Reports" and it appears just below the link for View Status Reports.

(2) View Status reports is now available as a PDF (as in the past) and also available in an Excel format.

Please review both of these changes and send feedback as you continue to work with the site and your volunteers.

(3) The Chicago ASC blog will now allow you to "comment" without becoming a member of the "blogger community."

These represent some excellent steps forward and should go a long way to helping you improve how you manage your ASC committees and your work with us in the Office of College Admissions - for which we are very grateful.

Many thanks to Dena and the entire team at NSIT who work with me on this project for these new developments.

Thanks for the feedback; we're getting there.

I would like you and others to know that we've learned that several of the reports are truncated and some "are empty." In all instances we have the data here on our side.

We'll continue to work to resolve these issues.

I think that the updates to the site are great - it makes life much easier! I particularly like the ability to export to Excel and the ability to view the interview reports.

I have one additional suggestion with re: the Excel export. Is there anyway to set the standard for the export to sort by report processed date? The reason why I ask (and I'm sure this will benefit everyone) is that if we are keeping track of the assignments, we will not have to revisit the entire sheet each time a change is made...the order will be the same. If, the new candidates are added to the bottom of the sheet, one could just copy and paste (without manipulation) any of the work they did on the previous list.

Thanks again for all of your help and have a great weekend!

Hope you had a very happy holiday. I put a lot of thought into the situation on how to make life easier for everyone (volunteers, chairs, etc) leveraging the online system. I think that a few improvements to the system (for the future) will make it much easier to assign interviews:

1) Allow for us to assign interviews via the online system. Once assigned, the interview request will go directly to a volunteer. The benefits: less emails floating around (reducing posibility for error), more control over who has what, easier for volunteers to know what they are responsible for

2) Allow for us to break the regions down (moving candidates around) to more specific area... e.g. move volunteers to specific counties so that it is easier to pair up volunteers / candidates (you can imagine a system where I have NJ - Essex/Morris county; NJ - Hudson/Bergen county; and below each area, the different candidates/volunteers so that I can pair them up.

3) Allow for the chairs to be able to directly move volunteers between regions (freeing up emails over to you and Nareth)

I know that it is too late in the process to implement all of these changes. That being said - it should be our role as chairs to provide this type of feedback so that we can consistently improve the process. I hope this helps...

Again, happy holidays!

Lee Kirschbaum
